All Metal Lock Nuts

An all-metal lock nut is a type of fastener used to secure two or more components together by creating a reliable, vibration-resistant connection. Unlike traditional nuts that rely on friction between the nut and the mating threads to stay in place, all-metal lock nuts incorporate features designed to prevent loosening due to vibration or other forces. The key characteristic of an all-metal lock nut is that it doesn't use a non-metallic insert, like nylon or plastic, to provide locking functionality. Instead, it relies on the deformation or distortion of the nut itself or the threads to create resistance against loosening. There are different types of all-metal lock nuts, each with its unique design: Prevailing Torque Lock Nuts: These nuts have distorted threads or a deformed portion that resists movement. They require a higher torque to install, and as they are tightened and the threads engage, they create friction that resists loosening. Varieties of prevailing torque lock nuts include the distorted thread lock nut, elliptical offset nut, and segmented nut. Serrated Flange Lock Nuts: These nuts have serrated or grooved flanges that grip the mating surface when tightened. The serrations create friction and help prevent rotation, making them useful in applications where vibration or torque might cause loosening. Stover Nuts: Stover nuts have a flanged base with a set of interrupted triangular threads. When these threads engage the mating threads, they generate resistance against loosening. Center Lock Nuts: These nuts have a center hexagon or round shape that is slightly deformed, creating a locking feature when they are tightened onto the mating threads. All-metal lock nuts are often used in applications where reliability and resistance to vibration or temperature fluctuations are critical, such as in automotive, aerospace, and industrial machinery. They are available in various sizes and materials, including steel, stainless steel, and other alloys, to suit different application requirements.
